28th March 2025 – A Question That Still Resonates in 2025
A friend of mine gave me a pamphlet published in 1969 by Paul Rose, a Labour MP in Manchester, about Israel and the Left. In the introduction, he asks a simple yet powerful question:
Would you rather be an Arab in Israel or a Jew in Egypt, Syria, or Iraq?
At a time when so many of us are being questioned about our loyalty to the UK and our ties to Israel, I feel this question remains just as relevant today.
What is Israel to you? It can mean many things to different people. But for most Jews, Israel is a safe haven—a land that belongs to us. It is also a democracy where Arab Israelis can live peacefully as citizens. There are few countries in the world—and none in the Middle East—that grant equal rights to all their citizens.
As a Zionist Shul, we believe that every Jew has the right to live in Israel. This is why we urge you to register to vote in the upcoming elections for the 39th World Zionist Congress. Your vote matters—it will help ensure:
✅ Religious pluralism in Israel
✅ The protection of Israeli democracy
✅ Support for hostage families and communities attacked on October 7th
✅ Continued funding for Jewish institutions in the Diaspora
